Power Outage

Power outages can happen at any time, and it's important to be prepared for them. The Cahuilla Fire Department provides resources and information to help residents in the Cahuilla area prepare for power outages and minimize the impact on their daily lives.

Tips and resources to help you prepare for power outages:

  1. Build an Emergency Kit  |  Keep an emergency kit that includes a flashlight, extra batteries, a first aid kit, and any necessary medications. Be sure to store your kit in a location that's easily accessible in the dark.
  2. Have a Backup Power Source  |  Consider purchasing a backup power source, such as a generator or battery-powered inverter, to keep essential appliances running during an outage. Remember to never run a generator indoors, as this can be extremely dangerous.
  3. Protect Your Electronics  |  Unplug your sensitive electronics to protect them from surges when the power comes back on. Use surge protectors on important electronics such as computers and televisions.
  4. Prepare Your Home  |  Install carbon monoxide detectors and make sure your smoke detectors are working properly. If you have an electric garage door, know how to open it manually.
  5. Plan for Your Family  |  Have a plan in place for how you will communicate with family members during an outage. Consider having a designated meeting place in case you are unable to communicate with each other.
  6. Keep Food Safe  |  Keep your refrigerator and freezer doors closed during a power outage to keep food from spoiling. Have a supply of non-perishable food and bottled water on hand.

In addition to these tips, the Cahuilla Fire Department provides additional resources and information to help residents prepare for power outages. By taking these steps to prepare, you can minimize the impact of power outages on your daily life and ensure the safety of your family.
